Tonight we started with a song that Iris had never heard, “Chick Habit.” It’s the English-language version of a song that was popular in France in the mid-60’s, and I first heard it at the end of Tarantino’s Death Proof.
This session would have ended perfectly with “Don’t Give Up on Me,” which is a good closer after Aretha. But Iris had had a small dinner, and didn’t really eat much until we got to the music. Somewhere around “Sweet Thing” she started eating beans and soup that I offered when she was distracted by the songs. So by the time we got to Aretha she had a scarlet runner in her mouth, another in her hand, and some traces on her face as we sang.
To keep her going with the food, I added “Acony Bell,” one of her oldest favorites. She seems to like almost anything by Aretha Franklin or Gillian Welch. I first thought of “Acony Bell,” months ago because it begins like this:
The fairest bloom the mountain knows
Is not an iris or a wild rose
Of course I disagree.
