Introduction

One of the unexpected joys of having a one-year old daughter is the dinner routine. Or, rather, the dinner and music routine.

Every day we spend a couple of hours making, eating, and cleaning up dinner, and part of the routine involves listening to music. We’ve done this for months, with only a few exceptions. I make dinner, we all eat together, and while Lorraine is cleaning up, Iris and I dance around the kitchen listening to music. It ends when Iris decides to play on the floor or when it’s time for her bath. The routine evolved from Iris’s first few months when we realized that we could soothe her by listening to a Shostakovich waltz; it worked every time when nothing else would. She’d stare at the speakers, craning her neck to see them if she had to.

I recently decided to start keeping better track of the songs we listen to each day.
